Flowers need food, water and a clean environment. So the basic formula is a little sugar for food or a substitute, clean water and some bleach or the kind to stop bacterial and fungal growth that may eat up submerged stems.
One recipe is 1 quart water + 2 tablespoon lemon juice +1 tablespoon sugar.
Another is a cup regular 7-Up + 1 cup water + 1/2 teaspoon household bleach. The sugar in the 7-Up will be the plant food.
Some of the flowers may give off sap that is toxic to other
varieties in the vase shortening their vase life, a process that is avoided by
frequently refreshing the water solution..
Trim the stem tips diagonally, to increase surface area absorbing water. You want to open the stems up to the water, so cut off the dried bottoms at an angle to let them take up as much water as possible. Trim ends every 3 or 4 days.
Remove dead leaves and dried parts. Dead leaves will deteriorate fast in water and cause algal and bacterial blooms.
Keep the vase away from heat source such as the stove and direct sunlight. Remove outer petals that are wilted everyday and if you have a spray bottle, mist the flowers every morning.
